Have you ever had a shot of Fernet? It’s unlike any alcohol you’ve ever tasted. It’s been over six years since I’ve had a drink, but I have fond memories of how I got educated about Fernet from my friend Mark DeVito. At the time I met Mark, I was living in the Russian Hill neighborhood of San Francisco in a two bedroom apartment with my brother Leo D’Agostino.

We moved to Russian Hill from the Mission District because the apartment we found was actually more affordable. It was a very different neighborhood though- more preppy and less diverse. I didn’t really feel connected to the neighborhood until I got to know Mark while he was bartending at Bullit. I came to find out he was part owner of the place, and his partners had bars all over the city.

We bonded in that small bar in Russian Hill and he’s had my back ever since. Whether it was hosting an event for my political campaign, or donating the alcohol for the Mission Bit gala events, Mark has always shown up on time and with a smile on his face.

In this interview, we talk about the story behind the Standard Deviant Brewing Company. We dive deep into lessons he’s learned and what it’s like to do business in San Francisco. He shares his ideas on what we need to do to encourage more minority-owned businesses, and how the direction of the city needs to change for San Francisco to thrive.

Throughout these podcasts I have tried to emphasize the importance of ownership, leadership, and legacy. Mark is a great example of a person that has developed a reputation building great brands while still remaining generous, approachable, and kind.
